March 2020 Newsletter #1

Welcome to the first edition of AoW’s newsletter.

It’s great to see good turnouts at club shoots, with new members now joining those who are more experienced and enjoying our wonderful sport. Our club members, old and young, come from many different backgrounds, but share a common love of archery. The club is lucky to have both indoor and outdoor ranges, and moves are afoot to increase our facility by building a field course – more news of this in later editions!

Through this newsletter, produced monthly, we hope that members can make connections, learn more about the sport, be informed about up-and-coming club events and activities, as well as those of
other clubs.

We plan to profile a member in each edition, and who better to get the ball rolling than our Club President,
Michael Clark.  Mike can always be seen at the range on Saturdays and Tuesdays, assisting others and occasionally finding time to shoot as well.

We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter. Contributions and suggestions are always welcomed!

Member Profile: Michael Clark – Club President

Born in Bethnal Green, London, he now lives in Woodford.

Mike first became interested in archery about 10 years ago, when his neighbour, John Goodwin, the founder of Archers of Warrnambool invited him to “Come & Try”.

Mike considers his greatest achievement in archery is growing the club from five members in 2010, to the current membership of 64.

His best indoor score is 283, achieved with his recurve bow on an 80cm face at 18 metres. He has qualified for 50 metres outdoors.

His archery goals are to see AoW archers competing in local, state wide and national competition, and to
increase the number of coaches at the club.

Mike has many interests outside archery, among them boxing (as a younger man), golf, and gardening. He is an avid reader and his two dogs keep him busy and active.

Mike’s favourite colour is blue.

His favourite music is the Beatles & Queen.

He loves eating steak & kidney pudding.

Favourite book/movie is J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings

His favourite superhero is Superman, and

His favourite holiday destination is Tasmania, because it reminds him of his home country of England

Safety on the Archery Range

Personal safety is a top priority in archery, and there are a couple of practices that are always observed when
shooting at the range (both indoors and outdoors).
Shooting is from the marked shooting line,
Shooting does not commence until the range is clear, and the appointed range master gives the OK
(“All clear? Shoot when ready”),

After you have finished your end, step back behind the shooting line & wait for others to finish,
Arrows are not collected until all archers have completed their ends, and the range master gives the OK
(“All clear? Collect your arrows”).
